Walk the Chester Riverfront Trail on a Tuesday evening in August and you'll pass two different versions of the same 32 acres. On one side, Subaru Park sits dark and quiet, gates locked, the lot empty except for a maintenance truck. On the other, floodlights are already on inside the WSFS Bank Sportsplex, where a group of Chester High School players is running drills on an indoor turf field that costs them nothing to use. The two venues follow different schedules: Subaru Park hosts scheduled events, while the Sportsplex is designed for year-round use.
That difference adds another dimension to the Chester waterfront beyond Philadelphia Union home games.
Two Clocks, One Stretch of River
Subaru Park has run on the same clock since it opened in 2010, back when it was still called PPL Park. For years, activity between the stadium and the Delaware River largely followed a schedule of Union matches, occasional concerts, or lacrosse dates.
That changed on July 17, 2025, when the Philadelphia Union and WSFS Bank opened the WSFS Bank Sportsplex, a $100 million, 170,000-square-foot complex built on the 32 acres between Subaru Park and the old Union Power Plant office building. Unlike the stadium next door, the Sportsplex was built to run 365 days a year, and WSFS committed to donating 365 hours of facility time annually to local community groups as part of the deal. Chester High School's football team has been one of the first to use it, training on the indoor turf at no cost, which means a program that used to lose practice time to rain now trains on a covered field every week of the season.
That distinction is easiest to see in what makes it onto the public calendar.
What's Actually on the Calendar
August is unusually stacked, and not just with Union matches. Here's what's confirmed on the Subaru Park schedule and at the Sportsplex through late September:

The calendar lists two Leagues Cup group-stage matches against Liga MX clubs: Aug. 9 against Necaxa and Aug. 13 against Santos Laguna, part of a tournament format that packs matches into a tighter window than a normal MLS stretch. Aug. 9 has already passed. Aug. 19 against Inter Miami CF is a regular-season MLS date. If you're timing a walk around the stadium to avoid traffic on Seaport Drive, check the remaining event dates.

The Building That Doesn't Wait for a Home Game
In its first year, the Sportsplex hosted a Mother's Day Classic, the first girls-exclusive soccer tournament in Union history, drawing 400 players from around the region. On May 14, 2025, Chester High School hosted its first-ever college football showcase in Chester, bringing Division I, II, and III coaches to Chester to evaluate local players, several of whom were offered scholarships on the spot and interviewed by NBC10 about the experience. None of that required a Union ticket. The Mother's Day Classic, meanwhile, took place at a private facility built next to a professional stadium that also hosts local community activities.
The building also houses something called the Striker Lab, described as the first of its kind in the country, which uses sensors to measure a player's kicking technique and pinpoint mechanical errors. It's a small detail, but it illustrates different uses of the two venues: Subaru Park hosts crowds for events, while the Sportsplex offers players an indoor place to train.
WSFS Bank's chairman, president, and CEO Rodger Levenson put it plainly when the partnership was announced:
"We are proud of the legacy we are building together for the community and the region."
The Sportsplex is projected to draw more than 500,000 visits a year and generate roughly $90 million in economic impact over its first decade, according to figures from WSFS and the project's construction partner, BPGS. Those numbers matter less as economic projections than as a description of daily foot traffic on acreage that used to see activity only on game nights.
Between the Whistle and the Kickoff
The quieter half of the waterfront hasn't changed much, and that's worth appreciating on its own terms. The Chester Riverfront Trail runs about 1.35 miles along the Delaware River, connecting Barry Bridge Park to the old power plant grounds and continuing past the shipyard where you can still catch a glimpse of tugboats working the water. It's part of the East Coast Greenway, which means the same path under your feet in Chester eventually links up with trail segments stretching from Maine to Florida, even if most of the people using it on any given evening are walking dogs or pushing strollers rather than through-hiking a coastline.
Barry Bridge Park itself, at the trail's northeastern end, has a fishing pier, a plaza with river-facing benches, and a great lawn that hosts the Riverfront Ramble. The view from the pier includes the Commodore Barry Bridge overhead, which at nearly 13,912 feet is the longest cantilever bridge in the country, a fact that's easy to forget until you're standing directly under it with a fishing line in the water. Anglers here benefit from a reciprocal licensing arrangement upstream of the bridge, where either a Pennsylvania or New Jersey fishing license is recognized on both shorelines.
